Protein Options for Improved Digestion
Posted on Tue, 15 May 2018
In our fast paced society eating well isn’t always easy. Add in our growing awareness around food sensitivities and allergies and our choices can easily become limited.
A common situation faced by patients in my practice is the struggle to find a quick protein shake that meets all of our essential amino acid requirements, with clean quality ingredients that doesn’t contribute to their food sensitivities.
Why is that?
With dairy sensitivity on the rise, whey products are out of the question for most people and if you’re looking to avoid GMO and soy products, soy protein is also not ideal. Vegan protein sources struggle to provide a complete protein and both rice and pea have been showing up on food sensitivities. So what remains?
Interestingly enough, protein from meat sources rarely -if ever- cause an allergic reaction. As well, the minerals and other nutrients naturally found in such foods are in their most bioavailable, best absorbed form. Meat proteins isolate products are beginning to find their way to the health food market. One such product is a salmon protein isolate showing promise in preliminary studies.
KGK Science will be studying a clean protein powder made from salmon meat that has been shown to not only be hypo-allergenic but also a good source of iron, calcium, magnesium and zinc. In fact, it is such a well absorbed source of iron that it has demonstrated superior in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia when compared to whey protein isolate.
Another positive claim made by the manufacturer is the products’ quick absorption from the digestive tract being no different than absorption of whey protein isolates. This factor is essential when protein isolates are used as a means of stimulating muscle growth by body builders.
If this is something that interests you, and you’re passionate about giving back to the scientific community, consider taking part in this nutritional study.
What’s in it for you?
Get a caring team of medical professionals including nurses and doctors follow your health for the duration of the study. You’ll be able to get feedback regarding your blood work results at no cost to you or the health care system. Plus, your family doctor will receive the results of any screening (blood or physical) exams that can be followed up on if required.

She completed her degree at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto in 2010. Prior to that, Dr. Negin studied at the University of Toronto in the nutritional sciences bachelor program. Dr. Misaghi has also received a certification in FirstLine Therapy from Metagenics, an innovative therapy designed to help patients achieve higher levels of health. Dr. Misaghi completed a preceptorship with a practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in Zhuhai, China
